In the shadow of a day which literally changed the way we live in America the most talked about post in my “social media feed” with thousands of engagements is about a Jersey and an autograph. Like “swatting” and licking ice cream and fighting for the camera - literally - we have seen the very nature of human behavior slide in an interesting direction. Watch the video to understand the damage it can present to your leadership. No one likes to be “wrong”. No one feels better about themselves when EVERYONE DISAGREES. No one wants to stand out because they think and speak differently from everyone around them. Whether it’s your accent or your ideology, life is just more comfortable when everyone around you seems to agree. When you’re in a leadership role, you have more power to cause this to happen, even unintentionally and even to your own demise. Because no one wants to be singled out for thinking differently, we all “mirror” someone in our life. Children mirror parents. Pets in the same household mirror each other. Gang members mirror each other. Politicians, large companies and even solopreneurs can run into this phenomenon. If you are a leader, you influence people around you, as you should. However, since they tend to mirror you and they want to please you, you are in danger of being surrounded by yourself. If you are not cautious, you will find yourself in an echo chamber. This is a HUGE reality in the shaping of cultural norms, societal behavior, consumer markets and criminality. Let me say something about the masses. Criminals don’t care about which laws are on the books. Write all the laws you wish to control the behavior of the masses. The one group who will not modify their behavior are those who can financially justify the “RISK VS REWARD” of breaking the law. In most instances, the reward follows the risk. The greater the risk, the fewer the competitors. The harsher the penalty the more the payoff. Then there are those who are “masterminds” of criminality who look for every loop hole. They find ways to avoid arrest, keep their hands clean, let someone else take the fall and still reap the rewards for themselves. In 2001 certain “over the counter” medications were moved to the “controlled substance” category. Thousands of meth labs were shut down and out of business over the next few years. Did the meth problem go away? NO - in Portland as one small example there are dozens of rehab clinics run by the local city and state government. They house mostly heroine and meth addicts in their 20s. There are also 60,000 college students of whom the dealers make prime market targets. The statistic at one time was close to 50% of people addicted to heroin in Portland are college age young people. So if they shut down the labs how is the problem still around? CRIMINALS don’t care about the law. Greater risk. Greater reward. The Mexican Cartels saw a huge market opportunity. They started their own labs and now run the I-5 corridor all the way up the coast to a market of 30,000+ users and sell all they can. Here’s my MAIN point. Laws which are manipulated under the guise of changing societal behavior only modify the behavior of civil minded NON CRIMINAL people to begin with. Creating greater risk for normal folks and higher reward for those who disregard the law to begin with. This is a leadership lesson because “Leadership is influence. Nothing more. Nothing less.” Criminals have equal influence to the behavior of society as law makers. The question you better be asking yourself is who has a long term agenda you can tolerate the most. After spending more than 20 hours this week “editing video” I have spent some serious time reflecting. I began to ask myself some deeper than surface questions and the answers intrigued me. I am confident the process will benefit you as well. As I sat staring at the spinning lollipop on the screen I was just hoping for two minor miracles.
It happens in MANY MANY areas of life. Leadership, relationships, communication, writing and even traffic. We become so focused on what we are doing, thinking or saying that we forget we have limited resources around us. Other people have focused concerns as well. Other people have needs which demand attention. Other people need us to pause for a moment while they mentally or emotionally catch up. See the truth I have to admit is this. I actually enjoy video editing. I like the creative aspects. I find myself noticing and paying attention to other creator’s filters and colors and camera angles and sound applications. What I don’t like is the demand of a process which requires a consistent methodology and large amounts of patience. Yes. I need to invest in faster and more robust editing equipment if I want to take my game to the next level. Yes. I need to spend more time elevating my skill level through diligent study and practice. Yes. I need to be mindful of all of the system and people demands around me as I am so laser focused on one task. The same is true for you. If there is something you must do but you find frustrating ask yourself this: “Do I really hate this task or assignment or just the process? They require patience, tenacity, perseverance, resilience, determination, patience, forgiveness, hope, tolerance, patience and kindness! Oh, did I mention patience? Whether you’re thinking of family, siblings, parents, cousins twice removed or employees, vendors or customers, EVERY RELATIONSHIP requires all of the above. Ironically, many people jump into marriage with the false belief that “love alone” will get you through. Today, Karin and I celebrate 25 years of marriage. It has not always been easy. We have struggled together, struggled against life, struggled against each other. We have fought through addiction, homelessness, losing everything, starting over, raising kids, loving grandkids, and the instability of moving homes and jobs frequently. Love was a huge part of how we made it this far. But if we had not applied all those other elements, especially PATIENCE, we would have given up long ago. Whether you are considering a life partner, significant other, marriage, business partnership or close employer/ employee relationship, here are three things I believe you will require for longevity especially in the face of adversity.
If you focus on being the best, most lovable, most likeable, most patient you, chances are your partner will follow suit. If you have common goals, common vision and patience - in the end you will have a winning team.
