Sometimes though, distractions alter the course of our future, destroy hope and prevent us from fulfilling our destiny.” J Loren Norris

THREE RULES TO WIN IN THE FACE OF OPPORTUNITY DISTRACTIONS

1. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IMPORTANT AND URGENT
The biggest challenge we face today is the pace of change. The ever moving global economy, the “never closed” digital market place, the constant news cycles are all reminders, those who sleep lose ground. In order to “get ahead” or even keep up with the competition, we all must have the newest technology, newest apps, newest sales methods or mechanism and we must apply these with a firm grasp on the winds of today’s social issues to avoid potential self destruction at the hands of “cancel culture”.

Mixed together, these factors become the tyranny of the urgent. “ACT NOW!” “LIMITED TIME OFFER!” “CLOSING IN X HOURS!” “SILENCE IS VIOLENCE!” Each one seems to demand redress immediately and the pressure to take action is part of the “sale” to get you engaged and activated. URGENCY is the emotion du jour. But that is not the same as IMPORTANT. Priorities should be determined long ahead of the news cycle. Driven by your vision and activated by a TO DO list which was crafted in accordance with the steps required to reach your goals, these priorities must keep you moving toward your VISION regardless the opportunity distractions which WILL arise.

2. QUALIFY EVERY OPPORTUNITY DISTRACTION 
If you’re like me, a “DO WHATEVER IT TAKES”  mentality drives you to make decisions. Often that means, whatever side hustle, project, part time job I have to endure, I will if it means financial opportunity to pursue my vision. This has not always been wise. Some opportunities will derail you for lengthy periods of time. Some will be career ending. Some will be freedom ending. Some will be relationship ending. Some opportunities are really close to actually being a step previously outlined in your TO DO LIST. When you take the time to ask a few questions before acting on each opportunity, you can better predict the positive or negative impact they will have on your vision and your progress toward it.

Here are a few questions to start with:

• Will acting on this opportunity provide GROWTH personally or organizationally?
• Will I learn something I could have learned no other way by engaging in the opportunity?
• Will I build my network of people, organizations, influence and impact by doing this?
• Will this opportunity cause or create a significant change in direction from my vision?
• Can I see and articulate how this opportunity is actually a step closer to my vision?

3. KEEP YOUR VISION IN YOUR MIND DAILY
Many people fail to reach their destiny because they have never taken time to consider deeply what their purpose is in life and match that with a vision clear enough to compel them even when distractions arise.
