“BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND”
This quote from Stephen Covey has been applied to everything from vision casting and goal setting to describing a cooking recipe. The concept is solid. The desired outcome should be clear enough to you that a sketch artist could create a photo quality rendering simply from your description. Without a vision of the BIG WIN clearly held in your imagination, the finish line will be blurred or blocked by the haze of confusion, frustration, trials and false starts. If you can see the vision of the goal always in your mind, you may not know how far away it is, but you will know it’s worth the struggle to get there. 

Before you can fall forward, you must know the direction of forward! If you PLAN to “stretch for the tape” you should know where the tape is stretched.

PLAN FOR FINISHING WELL PAST THE FINISH LINE
It really is amazing how often we see runners, leaders, entrepreneurs and competitors of every sort reduce their effort with the end in sight. Somehow they are convinced the win is theirs and they back off just a tad. Like the cyclist whose video went viral after they raised their hands and coasted to the finish line not realizing the next competitor was right on their heels. While they were coasting, they were passed to finish a strong second. Like the NFL player who ran the length of the field then dropped the ball on the one yard line and did not complete the score. Many entrepreneurs, leaders, business managers, stop just short of the finish because THATS WHERE THEY SET THEIR SIGHTS! If your goal is to accomplish 10% more than what is needed to succeed, then you will find yourself reaching the finish line with fuel left in the tank and momentum to spare.

FEAR OF FAILURE STOPS MORE PEOPLE THAN FAILURE
Myself included, most people are stopped, slowed, derailed, misdirected by FEAR than anything else. Fear of being found out, fear of exposure as a fraud not worthy of success, fear of the imposter syndrome has silently crushed dreams before the world heard their whispered cries. The longing to be successful, to finish the race, to get the dream job, dream car, dream house must be balanced by the insatiable desire to transform the lives of others for their better. If all you are fighting for is your own selfish ambition, you are already struggling with inner conflict because unless you are an egomaniacal narcissist, you likely question your right, your worthiness and your ability to be wealthy, powerful and successful. This brings us full circle!!

If your vision, which drives your goals, which drives your plan, which drives your daily task list and daily habits only ENVISIONS you with all the pretty things... you will fail to act on the daily tasks out of personal guilt. (Yes, I speak with decades of experience.) It is only when your VISION is greater than your accomplishments and rewards that you face the fear and storm the gates so to speak. When your vision becomes a cause, a movement, a triumph for all of human kind, NOTHING CAN STOP YOU! When you are running from a terrifying situation, you run far enough to feel safety and comfort then relax. When you are carrying a child or a helpless person from the same terror, you run twice as far, twice as fast, and with twice the determined resolution. One of the greatest qualities of human nature is to risk more for others than we will for ourselves, its a parental instinct.

VISION MATTERS - If you want to fall forward every time you stumble, work on your vision until you see and feel the JOY IN OTHERS when you cross the finish line for them and with them. When your success is their BIG WIN - there is no failing that doesn’t fail forward.
