Pay attention to Field of Focus. Depth of Field & Perspective. We already know “you will get more of what you focus on.” That’s why we teach young drivers not to stare at the oncoming head lights - you will unintentionally drift into them. We also know perspective matters. How you look at things changes the magnitude of the thing - position, angle and light play huge roles. Finally, we also know the distance we place between ourselves and the subject makes a huge difference in the detail we can detect. All of these ideas are true visually, but have you ever considered the mental, psychological and emotion ability to do the same? Leaders must manage focus, perspective and detail in their communication and relationships. How you are perceived and what others focus on will be largely determined by the details you reveal to those closest to you. REJECTION IS AN ATTITUDE! Don’t let rejection or the fear of rejection derail your destiny. By definition attitude = thoughts + feelings. Rejection is how you feel when the thoughts of others influence your thoughts of yourself.
It is the FEAR OF REJECTION which becomes an attitude in the way of our destiny. It influences our decision making, relationship building, risk taking and day to day confidence or resolve. "Your destiny could be stolen from you by the fear of rejection whether the actual rejection is real or imagined." J Loren Norris The same is true of those you love and those you lead. They crave and need your acceptance. They need to know that even if they fail miserably you still support their effort and encourage the best intent in them. Your words of positivity and your loaned belief could be the very asset they need to push past the fear and find their greatest dreams realized. Don’t let rejection derail your dreams, your destiny or the destiny of those you lead. Friendliness is a top trait to exercise for leaders. To be absolutely clear: friendliness and friendship are not the same. But tyrannical dictatorship and leadership are not either. There remains a need for proper protocol and protection of information while maintaining respectful and respectable relationships. As AI continues to grow at a break neck pace and threatens to replace every human interaction from ordering a Big Mac to hiring an Uber, how you get along with other humans will be critical. Friendliness with absolute strangers and camaraderie with coworkers will be essential to success as the day of machines dawns around us. Who you can trust as real and authentic will become more and more challenging. Begin now to entertain and express interest in other humans. They are without a doubt the most valuable capital investment you can make as a leader. Make friends. Be transparent. Be vulnerable (but wise). Build trust. Lead strong. Some find themselves in better circumstances from birth due to decisions made by their parents and grand parents. Sometimes those circumstances were imposed upon them by culture, societal norms, and demographics. Sometimes those circumstances were based on educational limitations, access to education or even a limited ability to learn, retain and apply education. But for every single person where this is the case, there is another for whom the circumstances started off very similar and the outcome was drastically different. WHY!?!?!? Determination. Persistence. Commitment. Priorities. Patience. Humility. Work ethic. In short D E C E S I O N S. CHOICES. What illusion were you under to begin with? How many ways have you been deceived? How many times have you been deceived? Are your eyes playing tricks on you? Or has the trickery been intentional on someone else’s part? Truth is we all have a loose relationship with what we “know to be reality!” Whether by trickery, deception or just wishful thinking, what IS TRUE is often different from what we hold to be true. Often the difference is a simple as ignorance and by that I mean limited knowledge or awareness. Spending some time in self discovery and reflection is very helpful. Spending time observing others and asking them genuine, curiosity based questions is another way to remove perceptions, deceptions and masks. If you are a leader, the truth is well worth pursuing. Know the truth. Photo by stem.T4L on Unsplash If you have ever missed an appointment, you know the anxiety which follows. How long before I can reschedule? Will this person still trust me to show up after this? How can I prove my trustworthiness in this relationship? Will they hire me now? If you miss the port call when the cruise ship leaves, you have a long swim home. The captain is very concerned about your well being when you are on board, but if you decided to stop at one last shop at your shore excursion, all the excuses in the world won’t get you back on the boat once they have set sail. You might have missed an appointment with a prospective employer, employee or client. You might have missed an appointment in time which only the cosmos was aware was a possibility or potentiality at that very moment, in that very place. Keeping your commitments goes way beyond punctuality. Keeping your appointment commitment is a rendezvous with destiny hanging in a serendipitous balance of opportunity. Leaders must keep their appointments. LEADING LEADERS PODCAST with J Loren Norris providing daily leadership video lessons promoting faith, family and freedom for Tell It Like It Is TV . Bank Account? Friends? Leaders need to be willing to look deep inside if they are “treasure hunting” to discover the value of themselves. It’s not your education but how you apply it. It’s not your experience but how well you can convey the lessons learned for someone else to employ. It’s not the bank balance but the ways in which you give and invest in others with the resources. It’s not your friends nor their celebrity but the value you bring to them which makes connections an asset. Beliefs drive more action than anything else. What you believe to be your assets will get time and attention. What you don’t believe to be your assets will get little attention and little action. Deep introspection is required for leaders to discern what we truly believe to better align our actions and assets. Without a deep dive, we risk not delivering to the world all we have to offer to meet the immediate needs and demands. What makes you angry? Or what is anger? Leaders need to know both answers. The nature and climate of our current culture is a fascinating part of human evolution. The rate at which society is changing and the factors which are causing it might blow your mind. Anger. Frustration. Finger pointing. Outbursts of rage. Violence (in the streets and in the work place). Distrust. Jealousy. All of these are expressions of emotions out of control. And dare I say they are intentionally provoked by some for financial gain and others for political gain. This is a problem. Fellow JMT leadership coach and crisis intervention specialists Veronica Sites knows better than I do the impact unresolved conflict has on the work environment. But I can tell you this: much of the problem we face in culture wars today stems from a lack of personal accountability, an inability to control our emotions, unfettered license to misbehave without consequences and the common thread of such behavior all around us. As leaders, we need to get a grip. First on our own emotions, second on an understanding of what is provoking those we lead and how to counter it. My friend and licensed Counselor Brady Daniel will tell you Anger = fear + pain. If you can discover what causes your team fear and pain you can abate the anger before it causes damage. Leading with compassion is required now even more than ever before. What are the strengths and talents of the people you lead? If you don’t know, how can you hope to lead them well? It might seem when you encounter a great leader that you have met a mind reader. Chances are you have met someone who is intuitive toward and compassionate about the people they lead. They have “done their homework” about the people around them. They understand the motivations, curiosities, concerns and meaning which drives them. If you lead others, take time to utilize tools which analyze and provide a snap shot look at the hearts and mind of the people you lead. #CliftonStrengths is a great tool for understanding your people. It is one of my favorites. #DISC is also a great insight into the way people think and respond to various engagements. If you are not sure where you are as a leader, John Maxwell Team has created a powerful assessment tool to get a barometer of your own strengths and weaknesses. The Leadership Game is another tool which make learning fun. If you are interested, ask me, I can connect you to people who are Certified to employ each of these tools. I recommend you employ these tools as soon as possible. Know your people. Know yourself. Know your paths to successful leadership. #LeadingLeadersPodcast Photo by Priscilla Du Preez on Unsplash LEADING LEADERS PODCAST with J Loren Norris providing daily leadership video lessons promoting faith, family and freedom for Tell It Like It Is TV . WHAT LEADERS DO: An analogy. While we all enjoy the feeling of eating a good robust meal, we don’t all have to time prepare one. If you consider the time, effort and expense of harvesting the meats or proteins, the veggies, the fruits, the grains necessary to complete your nutritional food pyramid for one meal, your mind would already be exhausted. But you still must cut and slice and dice and season and cook or chill this harvest to create a “dish”. Seriously, it is the reason fast food or restaurants stay in business. WHO HAS TIME FOR ALL THAT?!? Someone must gather, prepare and deliver what keeps us alive if we are going to be productive in so many other areas of life. A leader must be able to gather, harvest, process, prepare and deliver insight, information, education, expectation and more. If your team is busy “getting the real work done” you should be busy preparing the “meal of personal growth” for them. Gather the data, harvest the best ideas, season then with synthesized understanding, marinate them in useful application and deliver them in delectable bite sized morsels to be devoured on the fly. Lead like a mental, emotional chef. That is the role of a leader. Effective Leaders do it well and often. Your memory and recall are not the same. Scientists now tell us we technically never forget something we experience. The question is, can we intentionally and selectively recall the information when we need it? Can we CHOOSE NOT TO RECALL the information which does not serve us well? The connection between the MIND and the BRAIN is one thing. The connections between the BRAIN and the rest of the BODY is something entirely different. Stress hormones, emotional energy, inflammation, sweaty palms, nervous stomach, these are all biofeedback markers which often warn us of highly stressful or intense situations. Sometimes however we find our body responding with these markers, when the situation does not warrant them. WHY? Because something in our subconscious past has been triggered by the other senses in our body and released the emotional sequence inside without regard for what we are consciously thinking about. A old friend calls and a flood of emotions rise up in you. A feeling of euphoria or nostalgia my overwhelm you. Likewise a boss or a bully from years back could cause a negative sequence of emotion and hormones such as rage or frustration. By training the RAS in advance, you can better predict the emotional responses to suit your day. Watch the video for more. Or sign up for Attitude Hack training for your group. #leadingleaderspodcast
Leaders beware! Apathy leads to atrophy! If you get careless as a leader, soon enough you couldn’t care less. It’s easy to get wrapped up you your own drama. What’s going on at home, in family relationships, in personal finances and forget about the deadlines and challenges at work. The opposite is true as well sometimes we are so focused on work we seem uncaring about all those other relationships outside of the bottom line. Remember this, the rest of your team is made up of humans too. When we get cloudy in our focus on others, we forget they also have lives and needs and families and personal drama. A myopic leader doesn’t have the capacity to care about those problems in someone else’s life. If you allow yourself to compartmentalize issues in order to steer around them you may seem uncaring. If you allow that perceived apathy to stay, others will eventually become convinced you you care about them at all. Soon, you will not be kept in the loop. You won’t know when a team members os truly hurting or in trouble in some way. Don’t lose focus on goals and objectives, but remember to care for and about the people you lead while you still have the right and opportunity to do so. Photo by juan pablo rodriguez on Unsplash
Leaders do what must be done. Not what their title decrees. How often have you seen a real leader look down on a job or task? How often have you seen a power hungry manager with a title do the same? Generally a real leader knows they MUST DO what MUST BE DONE because the team goals and team success matter far more than the prestige of the title leader. If you are a leader. Lead. Don’t wait. Don’t watch. Don’t wonder. Don’t wander. Lead. Get busy doing the right thing. Others will follow your lead before they will follow your commands.
Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Those who DON’T LEARN HISTORY have little choice. As we celebrate America’s Birthday and Independence I want every leader of every level to reflect for a moment and ask yourself “have I actually searched beyond what I was intentionally taught to discover the truth?” Now I am not necessarily claiming a conspiracy theory, but as an American Veteran, I know I am still discovering things about my country’s history which I did not learn in school and did not stumble across in daily life. As I have spoken with friends who are naturalized citizens, I realize how few people born in America could have passed the citizenship test. I travel with a team to teach leadership and democracy to leaders in other nations. There are a few people on the team who are former political leaders of enormous stature. There are historians, professors and religious leaders. I learn from them EVERY TIME!! It is true, leaders are readers. If you don’t learn history, how could you ever learn from history? Celebrate July 4th with gusto! Have a family picnic, go fishing, camping, imbibing or how ever you choose to celebrate, just remember those who sacrificed EVERYTHING for you to have the privilege and get to know the WHY behind their sacrifice. #leadingleaderspodcast Photo by Anthony Garand on Unsplash Learn More Here From Historian David Barton:
Here is a free history lesson about women and African Americans in our founding history. The best coach in the NFL cannot win the Super Bowl without a team of players who follow the game plan, do their homework, and execute the play calls with excellence. No executive coach, life coach, leadership coach or communication coach can bring you or your organization to a greater level of success all alone either. Many of the better coaches and mentors I have worked with as peers or as mentors and coaches I have hired to improve me, now have “responsibility clauses” in their agreements. The purpose of the clause is to point out this simple fact, EVEN THE BEST IMPROVEMENT PLAN ONLY WORKS IF YOU DO!! If you don’t have a coach, mentor or advisor in your life you might need to consider the investment. The value of a third party objective opinion is priceless. To find someone who is committed to your growth and success, willing and qualified to invest in you, and able to draw the best out of you is a goal to be achieved. You deserve to remove the blind spots, improve your relationship skills, develop your vision, understand your own deep seated beliefs and be free of the baggage other wounded people have left at your doorstep. But even with the best coach, you will still have work to do. Develop a plan. Work the plan. Photo by Lindy Baker on Unsplash
Connections require conscientious commitment. Selfishness and self awareness are not compatible. Many people in business for themselves attend networking events to meet new people in an attempt to grow their business. One challenge I see for many people, myself included is keeping the focus on BEING RELEVANT FOR OTHERS! When we attend such functions with a focus on what we can get, we lose sight of the bigger picture. When we focus on whose life we could impact positively we find huge opportunities to grow and expand our network even further. I can tell you for certain, the business connections and friendships which have expanded my circle of influence from my own neighborhood to international speaking opportunities have all come from GIVING of myself freely rather than trying to eek some new business. Insuperable Vision Workshop - Audio Download with worksheets Day after day I meet people who are struggling just to make ends meet. They are adrift in this vast sea of humanity holding on to their job, their family, their home, and their car with all they've got. They see their life experiences and education as the last hope to find their purpose and identity. They gather, fill and stuff all the money they can into every opportune investment. Yet they are empty, frustrated, angry and just plain fed up. We have all experienced that moment; when we find yourself stuck in traffic, yelling at random strangers to do what they wish they could... but can't... GO! The idea that life can be better than it is today is like the flame of a candle fighting for all its worth to stand against the tempest. We all want a better life. Even when life is good, we want more. That idea, that flame, is the hope that lives in the hearts and minds of all of us. Should that flame be extinguished, hope itself may well go with it. It is the rut of hopelessness that traps many would be shining stars and buries that glow from the sight of the world. It is the rut of hopelessness that extinguishes that flame. Lives that would have been a beacon to the wandering are lost at sea themselves. Inspirations of success that would have been the voices crying out to all who suffer are hidden away in their own stale lives, they cannot share who they are or what the world needs from them. It is my passion to help you find your purpose. I want to see you become successful, but more than that to be free! Without vision people perish. Without vision, we seem to be lost, mind numb robots following the herd into the abyss that is everyday life. We do not live intentionally without a vision for our future. We do not live passionately without a vision for our future. We do not live productively without a vision for our future. We certainly cannot lead without a vision for our future and a vision for the future of those we lead. This audio course will inspire and instruct you to create a vision which will become a significant driving force in your life. Author
