…The following two excerpts are copied without alteration from LinkedIn “daily run down”. "Pinterest users searching for terms related to vaccines will be directed to results from public health bodies. The social media platform says that to “tackle health misinformation,” searches for terms like “measles” and “vaccine safety” will now lead users to the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and the Vaccine Safety Net. The WHO announced recently that four nations have lost their measles eradication status: Albania, the Czech Republic, Greece and the U.K. are no longer considered measles-free." "Think twice about putting that round of cocktails on Instagram— your bank could be watching. That's according to researchers at the University of Melbourne, who say we can increasingly expect our social media usage — and what it says about our spending habits — to be factored into decisions made by financial institutions. The researchers argue this monitoring is just "one example of the increased privacy invasion taking place in the finance industry." If you ever wondered who has the most control in the outcome of elections, buying decisions, education, misinformation, public manipulation trust me when I say, “the Russians” have hardly scratched the surface. In the military the phrase is “NEED TO KNOW BASIS” and apparently the American people don’t need to know the truth. Leaders. Do your homework. Do not simply trust the “information” which was easiest to find. It might have been “fed to you” for the goal of misleading you or directing a certain outcome. Soon the same “directed search results” will include your reputation (associations and hangouts?), employment history (social media check ins?), medical history (23 and me?), driving history (insurance discounts?) The data is being gathered. It can and will he used against you in a court of law (or public trial by social media (doxing?). You have the right to remain silent and you should consider it. Have you ever been told how to do something by someone who obviously did not know how to do what they were correcting you about? It happens to parents ALL THE TIME!! It happens to DJs, Drivers, mechanics, politicians, musicians and pretty much every professional in the world. The NFL has “air chair quarterbacks”. The Church has “Monday morning preachers”. Parents have “expert children” who never had any of their own. The pediatrician has “family physician via Dr. Google”. Politicians have “media pundits”. Everyone wants and hopes and pretends their opinion matters. Most opinions are like socks. However, there is a proper place for mentors, coaches, advisers and trainers. The true experts who have paid the price either in the form of advanced education committed with both time and money or by the pain of real life experiences. You can learn in the class room or the trenches but one way or another you will learn. Here’s what you will learn. Leaders discover early on to sort opinion from fact, theory from practice and experience from conjecture. Leaders also learn that listening to the “would be experts” rather than the real ones could could you everything. It is more valuable to be corrected by the real experts than to be accepted by those with the most VOCAL OPINION. Too many would be world changers are surrounded tightly by small minded people. Their ideas cannot flourish. Their dreams will not grow. Their hopes will be destroyed by jealousy, envy, comparison and competition! If you have big dreams, BHAGs and world changing ideas, you must be surrounded by people who have global sized thinking. Cosmic sized thinking would be better. People who fear paper airplanes will never board a rocket!! You cannot launch surrounded by people afraid to fly. Grow you! Get free. “Comfort is a cage!” You’ll have to PM me if you want to know who said it! Leaders don’t tolerate small minded tribal thinking. Leaders don’t focus on the minuscule. Leaders expand themselves and the environment around them. Give your dreams room to grow and make room for the dreams of others to grow as well. Leaders, real leaders instigate change which is directed at improving the lives and quality of lives for as many people as possible. LEADERS ADD VALUE TO OTHERS. Their focus is people not their own bank account. Here is a strange and oft repeated reality. WHEN YOU ADD VALUE TO OTHERS MONEY TENDS TO FOLLOW. Generally speaking that is the purpose and power of capitalism and a free market. But it does rely on free will to choose who you do business with and how much. It also requires taking personal responsibility for the choices and actions which impact your own life. It really is amazing how manipulative some people can be. From passive aggressive statements and veiled accusations to flat out deceptive emotional manipulations. It happens in families where children are grown. It happens between teens. It happens in the office. It happens with weak and insecure leaders. When we feel like the last tool we have to “get our own way” or to control/ predict our outcomes rests is using a GUILT TRIP, we really need to check ourselves. I am guessing most of us recognize such behavior in others long before we recognize it in ourselves. The power of a good leadership assessment tool like the 360 review will uncover some of the blind spots we can’t see, or won’t see. If you have ever heard whispers, rumors or direct accusations of yourself using manipulative behavior, it’s time to get real. Not only is such behavior destructive to your team, it will scar your professional reputation and the level of your influence for years to come. Leaders need to be focused on the needs of others and one way to do that is to focus on being better leaders and not using emotionally abusive pry bars to get results. This message seems to lean way to the side of the male audience but ladies if you will stick with me for the 5 minute duration of this video you will understand much more about yourself than you can imagine. Many leaders live a life of deep regrets. As we age, we can see back further to all the “would’ve beens,” the “could’ve beens,” and the “shoulda beens” which have pick marked our lives. That road map of failure and missed opportunity often becomes the scrap heap of a career. We long for retirement and hasten our way to sneak off the playing field without much fanfare or even notice. Heaven forbid they see us exit stage right and try to recount our inglorious past!! I present you with a different option. Consider this new perspective. Know the difference between true narcissistic personality disorder and those who employ narcissistic behavior because they have seen it work for others’ success. Many people copy or imitate behavior patterns because they see no harm in the goal achievement and are oblivious to the other harm caused. How they react to the following responses will tell you all you need to know. 1. Boundaries! Set them. Keep them. Be ready to fight for them because you will have to. 2. GET OUT. GET AWAY. If the narcissist will not acknowledge and respect your boundaries you have only one option to protect yourself and your self worth GET OUT! And stay out. They will try to suck you back in and all the mind games will start over. Don’t fall for it. Don’t wait for it to blow over or get better. Just go. 3. Focus on a healthy YOU! Get yourself into a new mental and emotional realm as quickly as you can. This does not mean isolation where you rehash all that was said and done. Nor does this mean commiserating with other victims of the same narcissist. You will not find much help or healing there. Set your sights, your mind and your time on what the ideal YOU would be and don’t stop that pursuit. There is much evidence to suggest limited recovery or change in the heart and actions of someone who has NPD. These three actions will be honored and respected by a normal person with narcissist tendencies as learned or contrived behavior. Know the difference for your own well being. What happens when communication is “unplugged?” Communication is a significant tool in the life and work of leadership. According to the “Law of the Lid” your leadership will never rise above the level of your own limitations. If your communication is a 4 out of 10, your leadership will not rise above a 4. So what is the biggest challenge facing communication? CONNECTION!! Let me give you three quick “R’s” to keep top of mind for communicating. J Loren Norris RELEVANCE READINESS RESONANCE And of course all of these require relationship and responsibility! Photo by Tim Napier on Unsplash Click Here For Leading Leaders Podcast on SpotifyAIN'T GOT TIME FOR THAT!! Seems like we are all too busy. To busy to work more? To busy to play more? To busy to learn more, be more, do more? Ironically, we always seem to find time for the unproductive or counterproductive things in life. We can watch a sporting event for 3-4 hours. We can stare into space (watch television) or play video games for extended periods as well. But when it comes to “bettering ourselves” suddenly time slips away mysteriously and we cannot determine where it went. Baffling really. Here is what I find true in my own failed disciplines. Time cannot be managed. How we use it must be managed. The key words for managing how we allocate time are PRIORITIES AND VALUES. The truth is, we all MAKE time for what really matters to us. As Zig Ziglar noted in “Over The Top” we seem to get more work, chores and errands done the day before vacation than at any other time in our lives.” That is because vacation is a priority and we want to enjoy it to the fullest without the stress of things left undone. We value the time we will spend on vacation with friends and family as we hope to unwind so we pull out all the stops to insure it is not interfered with. If you are a leader, and you have experienced this phenomenon you will notice how powerful it is as a motivator. You will also notice highly successful and influential leaders live as if EVERYDAY is the day before vacation. Sure, we all get rushed and pressed and stressed. We all find interruption upon interruption and then even those get interrupted. We also experience delays, details and decisions which alter the course to success. I challenge you to make it a point of determining your priorities and values so you can wisely manage how you use your time. You will never get it back. We all love to get a good deal. The BOGO or even BOGO 1/2 Off is worth the trouble to “hunt down” the deal or bargain shop. But everyone is leery of the “something for nothing deal” or the “too good to be true” deal. For the 15+ years I have been in entertainment it has been the same. Everyone wants to budget wisely for their event and most consider the MC an afterthought. After all, everyone has access to Spotify - right? And my cousin went to Toastmasters once, she can make all the announcements. Sure. That will save you some money up front, but what is the cost of a WEDDING DAY DO-OVER? When the playlist bombs and the announcer says something completely unprofessional you cannot undo that. Yes. This is just an example. We do a similar thing in hiring, in personal development, in leadership development for our teams. We buy used tires and get mad when we’re stranded on the side of the freeway - in August - in Texas - in Rush hour because of a blow out. Listen. A worth while investment up front could save you TENS OF THOUSANDS down the road. Take a chance and invest in yourself and in your team while the cost is small. You will find the PRICE is not nearly as high as the value. What happens when others work hard to muddy your communication and intent? From politics and media to parents and kids, from teachers and students to friends and family, there are thousands of voices clambering to be heard. Each voice is constantly shouting louder into the fray stirring up confusion over clarity.
Mass media, social media and “peer media” all compete for attention and action. Everyday there is a new “tactic to gain customers or followers” and most of them require a new strategic use of social media platforms. Persuasive skills, communication tools and linguistic manipulation have become the norm in business, politics and education. Leaders must learn and master the power of consistent, accurate communication. Repetition, repetition and more repetition will be necessary to combat the voluminous amounts of misinformation and useless information. Leaders will only win this war with a persistent preponderance of truth. #leadingleaderspodcast Tell It Like It Is TV with J Loren Norris LEADING LEADERS PODCAST with J Loren Norris providing daily leadership video lessons promoting faith, family and freedom for Tell It Like It Is TV . It has never been a great reality.” Thomas Sowell I grew up with the idea “the rich get richer and the poor go broke and it’s the Rich’s fault.” I did not know until recently (studying Thomas Sowell) the idea originated in Marxism. Sowell goes on to talk about the conditions of the poorest of the poor and whether or not the natural occurrences of poverty can be compared with institutional causes of poverty. Fascinating discussion. He also makes a very important point around the notion of equality/ a return to equal standing. In noting the economic strength of former slaves grew at a rate greater than two times faster after slavery was ended and before “governmental policies intervened.” Asking a profound question: was liberty better than welfare? Dr. Jordan Peterson makes a strong point in this area of discussion when he asks “Can you tell me, before we debate the economic and political policies which could shape the world as we know it, is your room cleanly and neatly organized?” He goes in to draw the illustration which many of today’s youth seem to gloss over. You have equal power, rights and authority to clean up after yourself, manage your own belongings be they many or few, and to be ultimately responsible for your corner of the universe. If you fail or refuse to do so, why would the remaining portions of the universe want to follow your lead? Thomas Sowell says clearly, “I was a Marxist because it made sense... until I did my own thorough research.” Leaders need to understand: nature is not balanced, fair and equitable. Nature is harsh and unrelenting. Life is natural and expecting institutions to override nature to create equal outcomes will likely end in disappointment at best - catastrophe at worst. I was recently talking with a client about their work environment. It is amazing how drastically the work place has changed in the last few decades. In similar fashion to the #meetoo movement what was once widely acceptable and expected in the way of conversation is no longer tolerated. You simply cannot talk to people like that any more! In short, if you have not changed your communication style and word choices since your first job out of high school in 1975, you should be updating your resume and your sensitivity training at once. Ironically, geography may be the determining factor in some language and terminology decisions. As an example, in the south (Bible Belt) the use of profanity is considered offense except under extreme conditions. Referring to people or addressing them with profanity might we be fighting words and land you in serious hot water for disrespect or even insubordination. However, you could be fired or worse for using the wrong pronoun if you work in Seattle, San Francisco or similar minded locals. You should know this if your job requires travel. You might be a bully and not even know it. Seriously. Bottom line is this: Bullying is ABOUT HOW OTHERS FEEL when the encounter is done. LOVE is accepting, forgiving and appreciated by ALMOST everyone. Leaders should approach everyone with love, respect and dignity whether you agree with their lifestyle, their logic or their lingo or not. Lead with love. Photo by Kiana Bosman on Unsplash Click Here For Leading Leaders Podcast Audio OnlyWhat if rejection could alter your future from your past? Would you want to crush rejection now? Many leaders, myself included have struggled with rejection in the past. We have felt the sting of betrayal. We have know the emptiness of abandonment. We have lived with the bitter taste of mockery and comparison after a relationship ended wrong. The results of rejection are as multiplied and varied as are the causes. Anger. Hostility. Resentment. These emotions often lurk just beneath the surface for those familiar with rejection. Sadly, one major result of rejection is the attachment to self worth which cause the question: “Am I really any good for anything anyway.” Worse yet is when this question of self worth causes ya to go on the offense and reject others before they can reject us. What a vicious cycle of destruction that can be. If you have been rejected, whether as a leader or before, you need to learn to view yourself differently. You need to adopt a healthy and balanced view of yourself and to focus on the good you bring to others. Finally, practice a more open acceptance of others in order to break the cycle. Leading Leaders Podcast Audio OnlyPatrick Lencioni #GLS19 said “there are only two types of leaders: SERVANT LEADERS and those who want something REWARD SEEKING LEADERS.” Which one are you? Do you offer yourself for the betterment of others? Do you give beyond your title, your role and your Nolen benefit? Do you do the work which seems “beneath you?” If so, you are likely a servant leader. If you want leadership roles in your life because of the “fun”’of the notoriety, the power and authority you wish to exercise over others and the fat paycheck... you might be a reward seeking leader. I encourage you to get Patrick’s book and do more homework on the issue. But let me suffice it to say this: Leadership requires a right heart, right motives and right thinking about others. There are loads of selfish people in this world with selfish motives. There are also loads of people with a right heart who want to help others. The latter will rise to the top in influence with our without the title of LEADER on their name plate or resume. Be that kind of person. I have been working with a client who is developing a new training program around advanced communication skills. When she has rolled it out to the public for the first time, I will make sure you have access. It’s going to be really powerful. One of the aspects we are sharpening together is the power of proper demonstration and it strikes me today that many of us demonstrate without intent. Let me say that in the John MAXWELL way “People do what people see.” Many leaders and communicators demonstrate through unspoken emotions what they would NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS say out loud especially on purpose. Just remember how often your presence enters the room before your body does, before your words do. Be intentional about HOW you enter. Listen to Leading Leaders Podcast On SpotifyIs there such a thing as an outdated idea? Where do rules and laws originate? Are they always just? Do we ever outlive bad ideas? This is a serious question which I believe requires serious thought. I also believe there is a movement in human evolution which drives against any rule or law for perceived freedom, liberty and independence which is actually a different form of bondage and slavery. Trading one slave master for another is not freedom. Have you ever asked “Why was this rule or law created to begin with?” “Who was behind the creation of the rule?” “What purpose did enforcement of the rule serve?” I know this is a heavy topic which demands much thinking and discussion and 5-8 minutes is simply not enough time. But if we cannot begin this discussion among leaders, who will discuss it? If we don’t apply some time to addressing the rules we live by, one day well have no rules and we will live by anarchy. Who do all elected officials serve? “The Oath of Office: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States” As Americans of the United States, we live under a form of government nearly 250 years strong. Not a democracy in the truest sense, not a totalitarian government, not an oligarchy or anarchy but we live in and serve a representative republic. The soldier, the law enforcement officer, most elected officials take the very same if not extremely close to the same oath of office as the President of the United States. Notice the last line... That’s right, the Constitution. WHY?!? Because in the wisdom of our Founding Fathers, MEN (and women) ARE CORRUPTIBLE. They can be “bought”. They can be persuaded, manipulated and mislead. They can be bribed, threatened and held hostage until their minds are changed. The constitution does not suffer the same fate. It is beyond threat - except by those who refuse to trust it and abide by its policies. Great leaders require a common value system which supervises their own decisions. A value system and set of ideals which supersedes their own opinions. For a corporation those are bylaws and charters. For non profit organizations they will be similar. For religious institutions there are Holy Books and ancient texts. When humans abandon ideals which have been tried and true, anarchy ensues. Anarchy is the worst form of democracy - mob rule, no one wins! Leaders need to commit to values, principles and ideas and stick to them at all costs. The time tested ones have stood the test of time for a reason. What should Leaders do about it? Especially in the world of politics corruption is a serious resource problem. Corruption is a mismanagement of resources; Human Resources, natural resources, financial resources and relational resources. When these things are mismanaged or manipulated for personal goals or personal gain, corruption can destroy entire national economies. Sadly, such corruption does not stop with high level government officials. Corruption effects businesses of all sizes, churches, families and communities. Even high school football teams and peewee t-ball teams can be crushed by corruption. Leaders need to operate with an extreme level of integrity to avoid corruption. Leaders must also be willing to challenge and “call out” those who are practicing corruption. Photo by Thomas Charters on Unsplash CLICK HERE FOR AUDIO ONLYGREAT LEADERS DO THE RIGHT THING. Poor leaders not only DON’T do the right thing, the teach and reinforce doing the wrong thing. Customer service is a critical skill, especially in retail where every day is a new handful of customers. Generally speaking this includes honesty, integrity and character. Fair pricing, consistent treatment and a willingness to admit wrong. Recently I had what I can describe as a less than pleasant and surprisingly poor representation of these qualities. Not only from the first line clerk but from the entire “chain of command” did I receive lies, threats, dishonest negotiation and an utter lack of concern for DOING THE RIGHT THING. Sadly, I am convinced, all of the tactics they tried to used would have worked on 70% or greater of their normal client base. Insuperable Vision Workshop - Audio Download with worksheets Day after day I meet people who are struggling just to make ends meet. They are adrift in this vast sea of humanity holding on to their job, their family, their home, and their car with all they've got. They see their life experiences and education as the last hope to find their purpose and identity. They gather, fill and stuff all the money they can into every opportune investment. Yet they are empty, frustrated, angry and just plain fed up. We have all experienced that moment; when we find yourself stuck in traffic, yelling at random strangers to do what they wish they could... but can't... GO! The idea that life can be better than it is today is like the flame of a candle fighting for all its worth to stand against the tempest. We all want a better life. Even when life is good, we want more. That idea, that flame, is the hope that lives in the hearts and minds of all of us. Should that flame be extinguished, hope itself may well go with it. It is the rut of hopelessness that traps many would be shining stars and buries that glow from the sight of the world. It is the rut of hopelessness that extinguishes that flame. Lives that would have been a beacon to the wandering are lost at sea themselves. Inspirations of success that would have been the voices crying out to all who suffer are hidden away in their own stale lives, they cannot share who they are or what the world needs from them. It is my passion to help you find your purpose. I want to see you become successful, but more than that to be free! Without vision people perish. Without vision, we seem to be lost, mind numb robots following the herd into the abyss that is everyday life. We do not live intentionally without a vision for our future. We do not live passionately without a vision for our future. We do not live productively without a vision for our future. We certainly cannot lead without a vision for our future and a vision for the future of those we lead. This audio course will inspire and instruct you to create a vision which will become a significant driving force in your life. Author
