Leadership demands a feedback loop. Managers and employees alike need to know where they stand. Expectations like communication are all too often left at the door. Meaning everyone assumes they have been expressed, received and understood when they have not. It is hard to live up to unknown expectations. As a result, there is an impression of failure on the part of the employee, student or team mate who did not accomplish the task to meet the standards never understood. This perceived failure often leads to a harsh and less than flattering review. This less than flattering review leads extended poor performance, employees disgruntled with management and eventually to employee turnover. This same frustration is directly impacting the bottom line. WHY? Because the expectations were not clear. The feedback loop included a pronouncement and possible punishment of missing a misunderstood goal or expectation. If you are a leader, expectation is your role! Be clear about what your expectations are. Be fair about what your expectations are. Celebrate every small accomplishment toward those expectations. #leadingleaderspodcast Photo by You X Ventures on Unsplash Prefer audio only? #leadingleaderspodcast

Relevant is not about you!!! As a leader, speaker or influencer - relevant is about the sensibility of your team or audience. It truly amazes me to see speakers, leaders, teachers and even entrepreneurs at network like functions who have NOTHING RELEVANT TO SPEAK TO THE CROWD IN FRONT OF THEM. Let me also say “being authentic” is not an excuse to be offensive. Being respectful of the style and sensitivities of your crowd will carry your presentation much further. Let me be clear - I have been around the block so to speak - one has to work REALLY HARD to offend me. But disrespecting other people is the fastest way I know to turn off the audience or lose the sale. If you only have one speech, one sales pitch, one 30 second intro for every single crowd - you should hire a coach or think through what you do and why a little bit more. Leaders who care about others do not run rough shod over them. “No one cares how much you know until the know how much you care.” John Maxwell (maybe not his original quote🤷♂️) REFRAME YOUR MOOD FOR THE WIN OF THE CENTURY. What if you didn’t have to be mad? What if you got to choose your mood? My mama used to say “You’ve got the same britches to get glad in...”. Honestly, I had NO IDEA what that was supposed to mean. The more I study human behavior, neuroscience, leadership and attitude, the more her “Redneck logic” seems to fit. Who knew?!?! When we are stuck in a state of anger, frustration or regret we lose our ability to operate at high level of function. We lose the ability to think rationally, to be objective to share emotions fairly and to choose wisely. We do have one powerful cognitive function still in our resourcefulness. We can still CHOOSE to change our mood. We can still choose to feel and think if we reframe the emotional mood. You know you have done it subconsciously. Watch the video for an illustrative incident you have VERY LIKELY experienced. Then try to do the same intentionally. REFRAME YOUR MOOD FOR THE WIN OF THE CENTURY. Photo by ANDI WHISKEY on Unsplash FOOD POISONING AND FAILED LEADERSHIP HAVE SIMILARITIES What if it doesn’t belong there? What if you introduce a “foreign body” into your culture or environment? The same thing which happens in the human body. The violent reaction of infection, illness, rejection which is designed within the astounding physiological machine we abide in is just like the reaction a culture experiences to something which doesn’t belong.
Like the food you eat, the words you hear, the thoughts you entertain and the people you allow to influence you will all have a profound impact on your balance and wellbeing. Photo by Drew Hays on Unsplash “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive. What the world needs is people who have come alive.” Howard Thurman Passion, purpose and profitability are often so deeply intertwined they become indistinguishable. Many people talk about “YOUR WHY.” Your WHY becomes something of a holy grail. Both destiny and motivation to pursue destiny in one. Many people use WHY as the explanation of their pursuit of wealth, power and status. Using WHY as the emotional appeal for others to connect to and to connect through. I believe WHY is critical. I believe when you are living and moving and breathing according to the purpose you were made for, profit follows. I also believe there is buried in your WHY a much deeper purpose and meaning than profitability. When profitability becomes your why you will be chasing your tail. #leadingleaderspodcast Photo by Ēriks Irmejs on Unsplash Everyone has value. Not everyone ADDS value. Know the difference before you choose your inner circle Loving others does not mean indiscriminately allowing people into your life at a level where they influence you. Yes everyone has value as a human being. Everyone deserves to be loved and cared for, to be treated humanely and with respect, to be regarded and heard when they have concerns. But that does not mean every person should have a say in the major decisions of your life such as who your friends are, who you talk to, where you hang out, when, where or how you do business. Friendships and partnerships can become toxic and destructive when unhealthy levels of influence occur. Be wise. Do your homework. Stand your ground. Surround yourself with people who add value and challenge you to be a better person. Even in business. Not everyone with money to spend should be your customer or client. Life is too short for that. Photo by whereslugo on Unsplash Every action has a reaction. Every cause has an effect. Every choice has a consequence. The choice is yours to make. The consequence of that choice is not up to you. ATTITUDE is part of the cycle of cause and effect because it is both cause and effect. ATTITUDE is the result of what you think and what you feel. More specifically how you feel about what you think and what you think about how you feel. ATTITUDE is 99% choice. You can’t always choose what happens to you, but you must choose how you respond. If something in said to you which causes an emotional reaction, be it anger, fear, sadness or happiness, YOU ALONE choose WHAT YOU THINK about those words and the person who spoke them. YOU ALONE choose how long you hold on to and live in the EMOTIONAL REACTION. HOWEVER - the ATTITUDE you respond with (your chosen thoughts plus your chosen emotions) WILL CAUSE another chain reaction. NOW YOU ARE THE CAUSE - your choices are in play, but the consequences are no long in your control. Leaders are influencers who must choose wisely and choose their ATTITUDES carefully. If you have a solution which will truly impact and improve the lives of others you need to know something... EVEN THE LIFE SAVING URGENT RESPONSE MOBILE ICU who doesn’t show up until they are called still advertises! Your best solution, your best help even if you are the heart surgeon relies on brand identity, top of mind awareness and constant reminders for the REFERRAL to come to you. This requires exposure, consistency, kindness, consideration and consistency. Did I mention consistency? “Showing up is 1/2 the battle.” True, but it’s only 1/2 the battle. What if the other 1/2 is showing up consistently? As an employee, as a leader, as a seller of products and services you must be consistent in both frequency and quality. Photo by James Pond on Unsplash MAXIMIZE YOUR MOMENTUM. If you want to face the trying times with constant courage, learn to maximize momentum in the good times. It’s hard to call the movement of success LAZY. It’s also hard to conceive just how much WORK the tough times will demand of us. If only we could balance the two seasons. What if we could transfer some of the relative ease and relaxation which comes with success into the seasons of struggle? I believe we can. Like a cyclist who pedals on the downhill run, we can push hard when the pushing is easy and see a magnified result. The magnified result is called momentum. There is nothing like it.
Momentum requires effort from you when everyone else is coasting. It requires hard work when the going is easy. It requires beginning strong to finish strong rather than counting on your competition to fade out with fatigue. Leaders create and maintain momentum for themselves and their team! Photo by VanveenJF on Unsplash ITS WHAT YOU BELIEVE THAT DEFINES YOU NOT WHAT YOU DO. Change and transformation begin deep inside the human psyche. Sure one can modify their behavior, but what one believes and repeats about themselves even subconsciously has more power than how we behave in public. Many trainers, leaders and managers, even parents inspire others to change their behavior by changing habits - stopping one habit and installing a new one. The troubles arise when the “new habit” doesn’t resonate with their deeply held beliefs. The story one tells is more directly related to deep beliefs than behavior. In the same way, changing or transforming the STORY has a closer, deeper and quicker transformation than changing habits. Here’s one more level of truth to get a hold of, if you apply #StoryPower to your efforts of training, change and transformation, you will find beliefs can change quickly and behavior will follow more easily what we truly believe. If you are a leader, trainer, parent learn to apply story power in your training. If you don’t know how to do that, check out StoryPower VIP Workshop Small teams and large teams require staff development. Why? Because all teams are comprised of humans and all humans need growth to thrive. When training is provided by HR to a large company we call it “staff development.” When the same training is provided for a small unit within the company or a small company we often call it team building. When the same training is provided to an individual we call it personal growth. Sure these trainings include slightly different approaches. Some are highly interactive and discussion based. Some are most specific to individual or team focused needs. Some are designed to accomplish a corporate goal such as diversity, inclusion or sales objectives. But all of them focus on MAKING BETTER PEOPLE! WHY? Because human capital is both the greatest expense of any company and simultaneously the weakest link. If you need staff development for your team of any size please check our what we offer from Tell It Like It Is. CLICK HERE Passion without process is poison. Let that sink in to your business plan for a minute. How many people have you encountered who have a great passion for their business or hobby but attack their passion with no systematic approach and no help? Like a kitten in a paper bag violently running one side to the other, struggling against imaginary barriers, becoming exhausted with all the effort yet success eludes them. Perhaps you have experienced the same battle. Working feverishly to “do it yourself” as though proving you can succeed alone is more import than the magnitude of your success. I believe it happens for one of three reasons. 1. We refuse to share the glory of success with anyone else. We would rather have 100% of nothing than 20% or millions. 2. We don’t have the trust or tolerance needed to partner with others in the work we must do. 3. We have no actual plan or system to get the work done so we run ourselves crazy with overwhelm trying to prove our worth to everyone else. Often to realize the people we were trying to impress weren’t even paying any attention. Take some time to develop partnerships where you can develop a plan and divide the load or you will soon find yourself in burnout. Photo by Manki Kim on Unsplash Niche marketing is a daunting task. What is my niche? How do I reach them? How do I build know, like and trust with them? Who do you like to do business with? My guess is your reflexive answer is “people who have money to pay me for what I do!!” That is likely true, but wouldn’t you also agree, there are certain types of people you so enjoy working with you would almost be willing to serve them for 1/2 the price? Would you also agree you have had customers you would like to charge 500x the regular price just so they won’t call you again? No payment is worth the headache some customers bring you. Right? One other truth about finding “good clients” is the plethora of marketing and advertising mediums and modalities we are confronted with today. How do you stand out as one among billions? It is for this reason Susan Hamilton founded Offbeat Business Media and Offbeat Business Alliance. Watch the video to understand better. Sharpening requires FRICTION. No axe, knife, razor can have a refined edged without friction so it is as a leader. Friction comes in community and culture. When we surround ourselves with people who rub us the wrong way we have an opportunity to be sharpened. Leaders must be willing to ask the tough questions, not of their team, but of themselves.

Are you playing peek-a-boo with your own success? We all hide from what scares us most. Sometimes we hide from what we love too. We cover our eyes then close them right and almost in disbelief open them again is astonishment. Leaders are often held at bay of their own success because they feel undeserving. Oh they want the success. They crave the end of the struggling. They long for a day when finance is not the biggest worry. They hunger for the one chance to say “I MADE IT.” At the same time, they hide behind today’s minuscule challenges and make excuses for fake failure. How do I know? Because I’ve done it. I do it. Why don’t we run full force with all we have toward the dreams and goals which light up our heart? Why don’t we listen to those around us when the encourage us? Why don’t we leave fear in the dust and proclaim with gusto and determination HERE I AM? Oh yeah - THERE SHE IS - THERE YOU ARE! Photo by Travis Grossen on Unsplash How do you manage or create the power of positive collaboration? Leaders must collaborate. Co- labor. Duh!? Work together! You can only have so many ideas on your own. It’s needed but complicated to bounce ideas off yourself. It is also complicated to fill every role on your team. It is near impossible to divide the workload, delegate authority and assign tasks —- TO YOURSELF. “If your dream can be done by you alone, your dream is not big enough.” John C Maxwell. Photo by Kaleidico on Unsplash Leaders must clearly express a strategic plan for others to follow.
How clearly have you laid out the plan to achieve the goals? How well do team members and those contributors outside your team understand their role? Have you articulated the role, activities and expectations for each individual who will bring this vision to life? This may not yet be a white board planning session or video conference with every participant - IT MUST BE FIRST A CONVERSATION IN YOUR MIND. If you have not thought it through and meditated on the execution of the dream or vision - it is still not more than a wish. GET BUSY THINKING LEADER! Photo by Austin Distel on Unsplash What happens when you skip a step? “How bad could it be?” Right? There is power and purpose in the process. Sometimes the process is the purpose more than the completed project. Short cuts and hacks abound in today’s instant millionaire world of social media gurus. Everyone has an easier way, a path to riches, a faster way to get the thing done - whatever the thing is. Trust me when I say, skipping a step could prove fatal. Take time to evaluate the process and review every step. It is often the smallest piece or part which carries the highest price when over looked. Photo by Conor Samuel on Unsplash It’s your problem to deal with ... for a reason. No one will solve it your way and no one will grow from solving it but you. Like a bug on its back or a mama bear giving swim lessons, the challenges you face are FOR YOU to overcome. You can blame someone else all you like, but if anyone solves them for you, the value of the lesson to be learned is theirs NOT YOURS! Sadly, most people who blame their challenges on others, also blame those who solve their problems for them FOR STEALING THEIR VALUABLE LESSON!! Like the craft maker at the swap meet. Don’t inspect someone else’s results and claim “I could’ve done that!” Truth is you didn’t, and it’s not their fault. Insuperable Vision Workshop - Audio Download with worksheets Day after day I meet people who are struggling just to make ends meet. They are adrift in this vast sea of humanity holding on to their job, their family, their home, and their car with all they've got. They see their life experiences and education as the last hope to find their purpose and identity. They gather, fill and stuff all the money they can into every opportune investment. Yet they are empty, frustrated, angry and just plain fed up. We have all experienced that moment; when we find yourself stuck in traffic, yelling at random strangers to do what they wish they could... but can't... GO! The idea that life can be better than it is today is like the flame of a candle fighting for all its worth to stand against the tempest. We all want a better life. Even when life is good, we want more. That idea, that flame, is the hope that lives in the hearts and minds of all of us. Should that flame be extinguished, hope itself may well go with it. It is the rut of hopelessness that traps many would be shining stars and buries that glow from the sight of the world. It is the rut of hopelessness that extinguishes that flame. Lives that would have been a beacon to the wandering are lost at sea themselves. Inspirations of success that would have been the voices crying out to all who suffer are hidden away in their own stale lives, they cannot share who they are or what the world needs from them. It is my passion to help you find your purpose. I want to see you become successful, but more than that to be free! Without vision people perish. Without vision, we seem to be lost, mind numb robots following the herd into the abyss that is everyday life. We do not live intentionally without a vision for our future. We do not live passionately without a vision for our future. We do not live productively without a vision for our future. We certainly cannot lead without a vision for our future and a vision for the future of those we lead. This audio course will inspire and instruct you to create a vision which will become a significant driving force in your life. Author
